Tips for Mosquito Prevention

The warm weather of summer brings everyone outside. Whether you’re grilling hot dogs in the backyard with family or drinking lemonade by the pool with friends, summer is for spending time outdoors. Unfortunately, your summer plans could be interrupted by uninvited guests–mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not only annoying pests, but they also carry viruses that can be harmful to you or your family. So how do you protect your yard from these party crashers? Here are a few tips to keep mosquitoes from breeding in your yard this summer.

Check your yard for any areas where water might pool. Pots, lawn ornaments, rain gutters, tires, toys, trash cans and wheelbarrows can all hold standing water where mosquitoes could breed. Check these areas often and drain and clean them as needed.

Stock any decorative ponds or water troughs with mosquito fish which eat larvae. Clean bird baths weekly and cover any unused pools or spas. Don’t over water your yard or your potted plants. Empty the potted plant saucers weekly and repair yard areas where standing water forms. Cap any uncapped chain link fence posts and cover and clean any machinery that may collect water. Drill drainage holes in playground equipment and tire swings to prevent water from collecting inside.

Make sure all your drains are draining correctly and there are no leaks in your outdoor faucets or pipes. Also be sure to check flat roofs for puddles after it rains.

Whatever your outdoor plans are for this summer, don’t let mosquitoes be a part of them. Take precautions and prevent mosquito breeding sources in your yard to ensure the safety of your family and pets.
